Kraków, Poland — Know-How has announced its first Komori installation: a GL-540 advance press with coating tower and full-sheet inspection camera. It's also the company's first move into B1 format, a double milestone for a print house that has grown from a single-colour offset shop into one of Kraków's most established names in publication printing.
The decision marks a shift in thinking as much as in equipment. Rather than adding another B2 to the fleet, or another press with years of duty cycles already behind it, Know-How chose to start fresh, on a new format, with a new manufacturer.
"We could have played it safe and stayed with what we knew," said Piotr Kaczmarczyk, Know-How owner. "But the market isn't rewarding safe anymore. It rewards productivity and control over your costs. We looked at what we'd need over the next ten years, not just the next order, and Komori was the clear answer."
The GL-540 advance is configured to print and varnish conventionally from day one, while leaving the door open for UV: the varnish tower is prepared to accept UV lamps whenever Know-How is ready to make that move.
The press's inspection camera checks colour and registration on every sheet as it runs, catching drift before it becomes waste, and shortening the changeover window between jobs. For a print house handling increasingly complex publication runs, that's less downtime and fewer spoiled sheets on every changeover.
"Know-How didn't want a press that would just do the job for the next few years, they wanted one that would still be competitive in ten," said Tomasz Balcerowski, Managing Director, Reprograf-Grafikus. "The inspection system was really the deciding factor for them. It's where the real savings are made today, not in ink coverage or top speed, but in how fast you can get from makeready to a saleable sheet."
Know-How's growth, from single-colour beginnings to five-colour B1 publication work, reflects a pattern of investing ahead of demand rather than reacting to it. The GL-540 advance is the latest step in that direction, and positions the company to take on larger, more demanding publication contracts with tighter tolerances and shorter lead times.
